The modern world is a very different place from the world that existed just 30 years ago. This isn't just about the changes to how we live - but also how those changes are affecting us. We have had complaints from clients about being overly stressed, exhausted after work, feeling isolated even though they live in a big city, struggling to find a healthy work/life balance and feeling constantly pressured and overwhelmed. Our tendency to "multitask" has affected our concentration and our ability to switch off and allow ourselves time to reset - something that is immensely important for our brains to work effectively.

Tranquility combines virtual reality technology with massage to provide a meditative experience that boosts your energy and mental clarity.

Our Deep Immersion concept - developed to help you switch off - is based on cutting edge neuroscience research. Your massage is performed on an acupressure chair, so there is no need to undress, and you choose the length of your escape from 10-30 minutes. Massage is one of the best things you can do for your body but with our busy lifestyles, how many of us can say that we have one regularly? Tranquility makes it easier for you to incorporate massage into your routine and reap its many benefits.

IMMERSION CAUSES YOU TO UNPLUG

Multitasking increases the production of cortisol and adrenaline, which can overstimulate your brain and cause mental fog or scrambled thinking. Instead of handling multiple tasks all at once, what the brain is actually doing is switching rapidly from one task to another, which creates a dopamine-addiction feedback loop and rewards the brain for losing focus and constantly searching for external stimulation.

Distractions come in two main forms, sensory (things happening around you) and emotional (your inner dialogue, thoughts about things happening in your life). Being completely immersed in another environment, lessens the impact of both sensory and emotional distractions and allows your brain time for rest and rejuvenation.

YOUR BRAIN NEEDS REST

Relaxation is when the mind and body are free from tension and anxiety, and is a very important part of stress management and mental recovery. Our brains are amazing and capable of performing extremely complex tasks but they are limited in their processing power and cannot function for long periods without a break.

The average person makes 35000 decisions per day, which causes our pre-frontal cortex to become fatigued and explains why our willpower is usually much weaker in the evening. The combination of seated massage and virtual-reality style immersion encourages a meditative state where alpha brain waves are produced.

Alpha is the resting state of the brain and is responsible for mental co-ordination, calmness and alertness.

VIEWING NATURE HAS A POSITIVE EFFECT

Walking around in a man-made environment such as a city, you'll usually find a lot of things that catch your attention; billboards, cars moving past, people talking into mobile phones and so on. Our brain then has to decipher these inputs, decide which of them to focus on and what to do about it. This may not seem like a lot but it does take quite a bit of effort and over time our brain can become fatigued fairly quickly.

Attention restoration theory is a psychological concept which explains why nature can have a nourishing and restorative effect. Nature demands very little from us in contrast to urban environments in that although there are many objects that are captivating, there is no action to be taken and this allows you to think less. Natural stimuli triggers a positive response and this can have a powerfully energising effect on the mind.

Recent studies have found that even viewing pictures of nature had the same effect on the mind and the more awe inspiring the view, the better.
